Summer Internship Opportunity for Minority Undergraduates at The Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR-MRD)
Summer Internship Opportunity for Minority Undergraduates at The Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR-MRD)

Dear Professors,

The Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR-MRD) is pleased to announce that it will be resurrecting its Research Experience for Undergraduate Minorities in Marine and Environmental Science (MIMES) Program in the summer of 2010, having received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Many of you supported our efforts to recruit minority undergraduates for our previous summer internship program that ended in 2005 (see attached booklet), and I hope that all of you will support  our recruiting efforts for our 2010 MIMES internship program.

The Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR – MRD) will offer eight undergraduate minority science students internship positions at the Marine Resources Center on James Island (near Charleston), South Carolina.  A 10-week summer internship program starts June 2, 2010 and ends August 6, 2010.  The program is designed to give undergraduates a “hands-on” experience in the fields of marine and environmental sciences as well as an opportunity to conduct independent research projects under the guidance of marine scientists.  The deadline for applying to the program is MARCH 8, 2010.

Applications will be accepted from science majors who have at least a 2.5 GPA in their major courses (2.0 overall). College transcripts and letters of recommendation from two professors are required. Applicants must provide written statements of fields of interest and goals. Mentors experienced in various fields of marine, environmental and coastal ocean science (including chemistry, marine biology, marine policy, toxicology, microbiology, fisheries science, marine, estuarine and wetland ecology) will assist interns in completing independent research projects. Mentor will help students develop and conduct research projects, write scientific papers and prepare oral presentations. Participants will also receive classroom instruction on topics that will assist them with completion of their research and presentations.

Financial support is available to cover dormitory housing and a summer stipend for students.

MORE INFORMATION AND MATERIALS FOR APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM ARE AVAILABLE AT THE FOLLOWING SCDNR WEBSITE: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/marine/minority.

If you have any questions, please contact me by email or phone.

Thanks for your support!
